Claim 50% off nowHow to use the meta tag length checker
- Enter the title of your page in the Meta title (title tag) field – for example copied directly from your CMS or store platform.
- Fill the Meta description field with the description text that should appear below the title in Google.
- Read the two bars Title length and Description length below the input fields. They update with every keystroke.
- Take a look at the How it looks in Google section: there you see your snippet in SERP style, including any truncations.
How to interpret the results
Each bar shows two values: the number of characters and the estimated pixel width of your text. For the title the limit is 60 characters or 580 pixels, for the description 155 characters or 990 pixels. The fill level of the bar follows whichever value is proportionally closer to the limit.
Below it is a status: Optimal (green) means your text fits and makes good use of the space. Too short – wasted potential appears when the title is below 30 or the description below 70 characters – then you are giving away visible space in the search results. Too long – will be cut off in Google (red bar) means the character or pixel limit is exceeded; in the preview you can see exactly where Google would truncate with „…“.
Practical tips for everyday work
Don’t just check your homepage, but every important subpage individually – especially product and category pages with their own search volume. Feel free to test several variants in the checker before putting them live: one word more or less often decides whether your core message is still visible.
After major text changes another check is worthwhile, because even rewording a sentence can noticeably change the pixel width. And if you want your snippet not just cleanly trimmed but enhanced with rich results like star ratings or prices, create the matching structured data with our schema markup generator.

Frequently asked questions
- How long can a title tag be at most?
- Google displays title tags up to about 580 pixels, which corresponds to roughly 50 to 60 characters depending on the character widths. Longer titles get cut off in the search results. With the checker above you can see instantly whether your title fits the display.
- How many characters should a meta description have?
- The recommendation is around 150 to 160 characters or about 990 pixels. Mobile search results often show less, which is why the most important message belongs at the beginning. The preview in the checker shows the display for desktop and smartphone.
- Why does Google measure meta tag length in pixels instead of characters?
- Because wide characters like W or M take up more space than narrow ones like i or l. A fixed character count would therefore sometimes fit and sometimes not. Pixel measurement takes the actual width of your text into account and is therefore more reliable.
- Is the meta description a ranking factor on Google?
- No, the meta description has no direct influence on rankings. It does have an effect via the click-through rate, though: a convincing snippet text brings more visitors to your page, which can have an indirect positive effect.
- What happens if my title tag is too long?
- Google cuts it off mid-sentence with an ellipsis or, in the worst case, rewrites it entirely on its own. That way keywords and selling points get lost. So check your titles regularly with the length checker on this page.
